I've been a bit busy this month sending a multitude of internship applications around the globe with hope of finding a position for this summer. Luckily for you dear reader, with a few offers on the table, I've found time to post this, most important information for anyone thinking of traveling to this fine city in the near future. So without further ado I give you my Top 5 places to eat and/or drink in Copenhagen (plus a few notable mentions).
Check out my Kool Map for locations.
P.S. in no particular order, sort of divided into genre, you get the gist!
P.P.S. I don't take pictures of my meal while I'm eating, not because I have any problem with people doing this, but because it is rarely on the plate or in the glass long enough to pose!
Original Coffee - The way I rate a coffee shop is mainly based on how good their take-away flat white is. This may not be the most scientific/hipsterish/intelligent judgement method but as it's my 'usual' I think it's a solid ranking criteria. At my local Original Coffee they make my usual the way I like it, espresso strong and fully emulsified into textured milk, and at a drinkable temperature (as opposed to the scalding hot barrels of insipid lactate pervade by our favourite tax dodging, multinational establishments). Small and cosy with a no-nonsense style and menu, this has been the perfect place to spend a Sunday afternoon composing aforementioned applications.
Noteable mention - Coffee Collective try the one on Jægersborggade, the whole street is a cool place to hang out. Taxa, go for brunch.
Ørsted Ølbar - Beer. Lot's of beer. Very good beer. Saturday night 7" vinyl. I shouldn't really have to say anything else, but what the hell, it's a good subject. This is not the coolest bar I've ever visited but it has the best atmosphere, hands down. Table Fußball, candles, comfy sofas, warm welcoming chatter, friendly staff..... Safe to say I've been back a few times and it never disappoints. Top Tip - there will be a good selection of Christmas beers available in December, so if you're a winter visitor create your own Christmas beer tasting challenge. Score the beverages on categories such as 'Feeling that Santa Claus may walk into the pub at any moment' , 'Festive Colour Gradient' or my personal favourite 'Tinsel taste'.
Noteable mentions - Mikkeller and Friends, the coolest bar I've ever been to. Ølbaren, good beer, simple. Bang and Jensen, has an entire wall of Captain Haddock portraits!
Fleisch - 7 course tasting menu of mostly meat dishes. The Scottish lady on the table next to my friend and I, wished us good luck upon embarking on this butcher's odyssey. We both duly guffawed with incredulity, and declared that - as Yorkshire men, luck was not required. 2 hours later we were eating our words (although I stand by my statement that the 'bread', which consisted of 2 door stops each with a mighty dollop of the best liver pate I'd ever tasted, was in fact the 8th course). It was the quality of each course rather than our eventual replete state which makes this my favourite meal of the time I've spent in Copenhagen.
Noteable mentions - Gorilla, 10 courses of varied culinary delights and a very close 2nd place. Manfred's, another 7 courser, this time mostly veg, organic wine, very interesting.
Paper Island - Pulled Duck Burgers, Colombian Mushroom Burgers, Surf and Turf Burgers, (none of these are the best burgers in CPH BTW) all under one giant roof! Korean BBQ, Smørbrod, and even a British pancake house (seriously, we're under represented in this establishment, where's the PieMinister when you need him?) Basically lots of different street food vendors in a big warehouse. Apparently it's going to be shut down next year which is a crying shame. Go there before it's too late. If you care about your stomach at all, I beg you.
Noteable mention - Torvehallern - more central, more professional but not quite as good as Papirøen. The knife shop is very cool though. Cocks and Cows - the best burgers in CPH.
La Esquina - Chorizo breakfast omelette. That is all.
Disclaimer - the research for this top 5 list was undertaken enthusiastically but with a tight budget. If any more expensive establishments would like to receive my recognition, contributions to said research would not go unwelcome although this would not guarantee a favourable assessment!
Tune in next time for the further adventures of Mr Standaloft in CPH.
